Harry Kane drops bad news on Aston Villa and Tottenham stars

Harry Kane looks set to remain a central part of the England set up for some time yet in a blow to Ollie Watkins and Dominic Solanke.

On Sunday night (17th November), the Three Lions’ captain extended his goalscoring record for his country to 69 goals in 103 caps.

That came when he opened the scoring from the penalty spot in his country’s 5-0 thrashing of the Republic of Ireland in Lee Carsley’s final game in interim charge of the national team.

The following day, the question was posed to Kane about whether the 2026 World Cup will be his last tournament for the Three Lions.

He will be 33-years-old by the time that tournament is played, although it seems that is not a concern for him.

Responding to those questions about his England future, Kane told PA he does not think that tournament will be his last (via BBC Sport).

He also suggested he feels as good as he ever has, all of which will be exciting for the vast majority of football fans in this country.

However, for two of his international teammates, it is hard to imagine this will be seen as quite such positive news.

Ollie Watkins, Dominic Solanke face a wait to be England regulars

In Aston Villa’s Watkins and Solanke – who joined Tottenham in the summer to effectively fill the void left by Kane – the Three Lions had two other very strong centre-forwards in their latest squad.

Both have been excellent in the Premier League in recent times, and Watkins in particular has come up with some big moments for his country in the past.

However, while Kane is still available for England, his own status as the country’s record goalscorer and captain, means he is sure to remain first choice in that role.

Indeed, his chances of retaining that position will surely be boosted now, by the fact Thomas Tuchel is taking over from Carlsey.

Kane enjoyed an excellent individual campaign under the German for Bayern Munich last season, and so will surely now have his faith to continue to lead the line for the Three Lions.

If, as he says, the England captain is also as good as he has ever felt, and with his sights set on playing even beyond the next World Cup, there may be little reason to drop him either.

As a result, he does look to be in a position to remain first choice for his country for some time to come yet.

In turn, that leaves Watkins and Solanke facing a long wait to take over that role themselves. At 28 and 27 respectively, it may also mean they will not have much time in that position once Kane steps back.

While many in this country may therefore welcome these comments from the captain, there may be a more mixed perspective on them, for the Villa and Spurs strikers.
