Enzo Fernandez: Argentine media rave about Chelsea star’s display in new role

Enzo Fernandez has been heavily praised by the media for his performance in Argentina’s 2-1 victory against Mauritania while operating in an unfamiliar position.

The Chelsea star netted the opener in the friendly as the South American nation prepares to defend the World Cup trophy in the summer.

For the 25-year-old, it was also a return to form, with the Blues star having a series of below-average displays going into the international break.

However, the Argentina victory showcased all the good he does on the pitch, with the local media labelling the midfielder as “always reliable”.

Below, Football Insider has explored the reaction to his performance and how it can impact Chelsea’s Champions League hopes.

Enzo Fernandez is ‘one of the best Argentine’s this season’

Fernandez may have been up against a poor opponent in Mauritania, but his did not let this affect his display.

Playing in central midfield, the 25-year-old scored a fantastic goal as he placed the ball into the corner of the net with a first-time finish.

From here, he proceeded to dominant proceedings with his energy, and rarely misplaced a pass.

This display was picked up by Argentine outlet Bola VIP, who were quick to praise Fernandez for his performance operating in a different position to his usual central midfield role at Chelsea.

They wrote on 27 March: “Always reliable, and then some. Enzo is one of the best Argentinians this season and he showed his quality on the pitch at La Bombonera.

“Playing as a left-sided midfielder, he broke through the lines of attack and made runs into the opposition’s penalty area. In fact, that’s how Argentina’s first goal came about, thanks to his unexpected appearance after a cross from Molina.”

For Chelsea, they will be ecstatic about this performance. There is no doubt that Fernandez is one of their best players when on form.

Therefore, if he can keep this form up, Chelsea will surely still qualify for the Champions League this season despite their recent dip.

Liverpool’s recent struggles have given the Blues hope, and if Fernandez returns to Stamford Bridge and puts in similar displays, wins will return for Liam Rosenior.

Could Fernandez leave Chelsea in the summer?

Ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness exclusively told Football Insider that Chelsea are at risk of losing Fernandez.

The 25-year-old has recently aired comments criticising the club’s decision to sack former manager Enzo Maresca as the BlueCo project continues to turn sour.

Much of Chelsea’s transfer plans rely on Champions League qualification this season, and if this is not achieved, it looks increasingly likely that he will depart.

However, it remains to be seen if the Blues are willing to let go of one of their most prized assets, or if they will battle to keep hold of Fernandez.
