Erik ten Hag: ‘Massive’ Man United U-turn on the cards – O’Rourke
Manchester United would be making a “massive” U-turn on their previous plans to sack Erik ten Hag if they were to let him stay on as manager next season.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed it would be a “big surprise” if the Dutchman were to remain at Man United following their performances in the Premier League over the past season.
The Red Devils hierarchy are conducting a thorough season review, where they will decide whether to stick with Ten Hag or let him go after claiming a 1-0 win over Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
O’Rourke suggested the Wembley success has raised question marks over the 54-year-old’s future as there is now a lot of support for him to remain at the club beyond this summer.
Football Insider revealed on 28 May that Ten Hag will likely still be sacked as Old Trafford chiefs have been disappointed by the club’s league performances after finishing eighth in the table.
Erik ten Hag could be sacked by Man United after season review
Ten Hag had a solid start to life in the Premier League after leading Man United to a third-place finish following his move from Ajax in 2022.
The FA Cup victory has masked what had been a largely disappointing second season for the Dutchman, with the Red Devils dumped out of Europe in the group stages and finishing outside of the European places in the Premier League.
O’Rourke believes Ten Hag could be given a “stay of execution” if the new regime – led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe – decides there aren’t any outstanding candidates available to replace him.

Mauricio Pochettino and Roberto De Zerbi are in the frame for the job, but former Red Devils coach Kieran McKenna is now out of the running after signing a new contract with Ipswich Town.
Football Insider revealed last month Pochettino has emerged as a “serious and very interesting” option for the club after he left Chelsea by mutual consent.
