Everton and Nottingham Forest relegation: Expert can’t believe ‘mindboggling’ new twist

Former Everton chief Keith Wyness can’t believe the Toffees or Nottingham Forest could be relegated five days after the final round of Premier League fixtures.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the Premier League is a “laughing stock” after tampering with the integrity of the table.

Nottingham Forest were deducted four points for a Profitability and Sustainability Regulations (PSR) breach on Monday (18 March) and were subsequently plunged into the bottom three.

Everton, who are four points from danger, have already been deducted six points and face a separate PSR charge next week.

The Premier League have set 24 May as a backstop date for concluding any appeals from the two clubs.

Wyness insisted it is “mindboggling” that a provisional table could be in place at the end of the 2023-24 campaign.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It seems that the arguments from the lawyers are all being contrived to meet a particular end.

“It’s just very confusing – there’s no clear structure.

“To let everything be subjective just makes it a mockery.

“We’re talking about the most important thing to clubs. It’s relegation from the Premier League.

“The mess they’re making of the whole integrity of the league table is hard to believe. We’re a laughing stock.

“There’s at least two asterisks in the table now. We know that if Forest or Everton appeal, then 24 May is the last date the table can change – that’s after the season.

“It’s mindboggling.”
