Whelan backs Everton to make 'ruthless' Gomes decision after Echo update

Rafael Benitez may have “seen something” in pre-season from Andre Gomes to convince him that he is not in his Everton plans.

So say ex-Premier League forward Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 28-year-old Portuguese midfielder.

The Liverpool Echo reported on 5th August that Gomes, who joined for £22million in 2019, has received interest from his old club Benfica.

It is claimed that the Toffees would be open to selling the midfielder, whose contract runs until 2024, if the right offer is received.

And Whelan claims that new manager Rafael Benitez may not have been convinced by Gomes in his short time at the club.

“He’s obviously seen something,” he told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.

“Because you look at the way he plays in midfield and you see he’s very aggressive and has a good work ethic about him.

“But you’ve got to trust the manager, trust Rafa, that he’s seen what he needs in pre-season.

“At the moment, he’s bringing in flair players, those who are going to affect a game in the final third.

“If he feels he has enough in that midfield area then you’ve got to be ruthless. There’s no friends in football, no matter how long you’ve been at a club.

“There is always going to be changes and new people coming in, especially at a club wanting to make strides like Everton.

Yes, he has had a bad injury and come back last season and played his part but these things happen. You just have to trust the manager.”
