Everton are in the hunt to sign AC Milan defender David Calabria, according to a report.
Italian news outlet Calcio Mercato claims that the Toffees are “crazy” about signing Calabria, 21, and have been keeping close tabs on the Italy Under-21 international, especially before he rose to prominence in the first-team at the San Siro this season.
However it is understood that the Everton scouting department has been sent “clear signals” by European giants Milan in the last month that Calabria is not up for sale.
That will not stop the Merseyside club though as the report says that they will continue to monitor the right-sided flyer, who can play at both right-back and on the wing.
He has made 20 appearances in all competitions this season for AC Milan and scored his first top-flight goal in the Serie A win against Roma at the weekend.
Football Insider verdict
Everton need to look at strengthening their full-back options in the summer transfer window and Calabria would be a perfect fit. He is young, very good going forward and can also play at left-back if needs be. Seamus Coleman may not be as good as he once was when he returns from a serious broken leg he suffered last year while Leighton Baines is not getting any younger and also seems to be out injured. Cuco Martina is not a viable option going forward and Calabria is a clear improvement on him. Italy has a great reputation for developing defenders and Calabria is bound to play for the national team in the future.
In other Everton news, the Toffees are plotting contract talks with this rapid centre-forward who could be on the move in the summer.
