Kieran Maguire: Everton face 'very steep challenge' as US masterplan revealed

Everton are correct to explore commercial opportunities in the United States – but they must do something to stand out in a saturated market.

So says finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Toffees overseas approach.

Speaking to Forbes on 31st July, Everton consultant Jurgen Mainka claimed that the club is looking to form “strategic partnerships” across the pond.

He explains that the way the club’s commercial department want to achieve this is by building and engaging with the fanbase in the US.

Maguire claimed that this will be challenging for a club that lacks the Stateside fame of the likes of Liverpool or Real Madrid.

“This is straight from the textbook,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“If I was teaching growth strategy, I would thoroughly agree with him.

“The problem is trying to get your voice heard. There is so much focus on Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool, Chelsea etc.

“That doesn’t leave a lot of space for a club like Everton. So is it the right strategy? Yes, but is it achievable? That’s going to be the challenge.

“You have got to have something you can sell because most people aren’t aware of Everton in the States.

“What they do have working in their favour is that Liverpool as a city is a great exporter of people. There are a lot of high-profile Evertonians.

“But converting that into additional revenues would be a very steep challenge.”
