Pundit blasts Everton 25-year-old as Benitez plots Sanchez signing

Noel Whelan has backed Everton to complete the signing of a new wing-back after Alex Iwobi flopped in the role last season.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, savaged the 25-year-old for his performances both in attack and a makeshift defensive role.

As revealed by Football Insider on August 2nd, Everton and Tottenham have set sights on signing Club America and Mexico right-back Jorge Sanchez.

Seamus Coleman has been the Toffees’ first-choice right-back for several years but missed part of last season through injury.

Mason Holgate often filled in as part of a back four but Carlo Ancelotti used Iwobi as a wing-back in a back five.

Whelan ripped into the Nigeria international for his performances and suggested signing a natural wing-back was a must.

“It didn’t work with Iwobi,” Whelan told Football Insider deputy editor Russell Edge.

“Maybe a handful of games we saw a great performance out of him but he’s not been the player that Everton wanted to sign really. You expect more.

“They’ve not got the best out of him in wide areas and not got the best out of him in the number 10.

“We certainly didn’t see somebody that can play that wing-back role with longevity throughout a whole season.

“I think it’s crucial in certain areas that you get naturals playing in their natural position.

Iwobi joined Everton in 2019 and has a contract until 2024.

He played 30 times in the Premier League last season, with one goal and two assists to his name.
