David Moyes revealed on Friday that Lamine Kone had rejected a new contract offer at Sunderland – and Toffees supporters have reacted jubilantly to the news.
The manager, speaking ahead of the Black Cats’ clash with local rivals Middlesbrough on Sunday, announced that the 27-year-old has turned down a new and improved deal at the club and arrived in training with a “bad back”.
Sky Sports North East reporter Keith Downie revealed the news on his personal Twitter account on Friday afternoon and quoted Moyes as saying Sunderland want Kone to stay.
Moyes says he made Kone the new contract offer earlier than Sept 1 to give him the security he's asked for, but he doesn't want it.

The Sun claimed that Moyes has already rejected a £14million bid for the defender from Everton, but this latest reveal could force the Scotsman’s hands after the experienced player had already handed in a transfer request to the club.
Fans of the Toffees have welcomed the news of Kone rejecting a new deal, and some have reacted to quotes their former manager made when taking Marouane Felliani and trying to sign Leighton Baines at Manchester United.

Ronald Koeman has already brought in Idrissa Gueye, Maarten Stekelenburg, Ashley Williams and Yannick Bolasie this summer.
The Dutch manager is reportedly keen to add a few more players to his squad and has been strongly linked with Joe Hart and Rachid Ghezzal, as well as Kone.
Everton face West Brom on Saturday and Koeman will be keen to get his first competitive win in charge of the Toffees.
In other Everton transfer news, Yannick Bolasie has dismissed his price tag as irrelevant after joining the Toffees.
