Everton fans react on Twitter to 23-year-old ultimatum

By Matt Farr

Ross Barkley has been handed an Everton ultimatum by manager Ronald Koeman this summer – but fans on Twitter have mixed views.

The 23-year-old has just over one year left to run on his current deal at Goodison Park, but is no closer to signing an extension.

However, following the win over Leicester on Sunday, Koeman revealed that he was set to offer the England international a fresh contract.

But it came with a stern warning for the Everton attacker, with the Dutchman insisting that if he doesn’t sign for the club, he will be sold.

Koeman’s stern approach is a risky one, but it is one that will finally put an end to the prolonged uncertainty over Barkley’s long-term future at the club.

But Everton fans remain divided as to what the ultimatum means for Barkley’s future, with some expecting him to quit this summer, and others expecting him to re-sign.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

The comments come after Barkley gave an inspired display in the 4-2 win over Leicester in the Premier League, with the midfielder claiming a superb assist for Everton’s second goal.

He has struggled for consistency this season, but has shown great improvement since the new year to earn his place back in the hearts of a number of Everton fans.

But his five goals and eight assists in all competitions this season may not be enough to satisfy the critics.
