Everton fans react on Twitter as Stekelenburg produces stunning display

By Emma Sanders

Maarten Stekelenburg produced a stunning display against Manchester City at the Etihad and fans were praising his performance on Twitter.

The Dutch goal-keeper saved two penalties as a goal from Romelu Lukaku helped Everton record a vital 1-1 draw against the Premier League leaders.

Stekelenburg came under criticism after his performance for the Netherlands against France during the international break.

However, the 34 year-old produced a stunning display on Saturday afternoon, stopping Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero from the penalty spot.

He produced yet another sublime save as De Bruyne’s outrageous attempt in the dying minutes was pushed onto the woodwork.

Stekelenburg was clearly the outstanding performer as his side hung on to the draw in the second-half but there were also solid performances from his two centre-backs.

Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams made some brilliant interceptions whilst Lukaku’s threat up front proved invaluable once again.

Manchester City have now gone three games without a win, despite remaining unbeaten but it is still a very good point for the Merseysiders.

It was Stekelenburg’s performance which got the fans talking though and there was plenty of celebrations as he denied City the opportunity to take the lead.
