Everton are now leading the race to sign Anderlecht starlet Youri Tielemans according to a report.
The Liverpool Echo claims that Everton chairman Bill Kenwright is in contact with the 19-year-old’s agent, Christophe Henrotay, over a potential £22million move.
Monaco are also said to be interested in the youngster and the Telegraph previously reported that the French side led the race after promising the Belgian regular first team football, if he were to opt for a move to them.
However thanks to the Kenwright’s contacts in Belgium, and Everton’s greater financial capabilities, the Toffees have moved ahead of Monaco in the race for Tielemans’ signature.
The 19-year-old is enjoying the best season of his young career, and has scored 18 goals and provided 14 assists from midfield, in his 47 league and cup games.
Tielemans has also represented the senior Belgium side three times.
According to the Liverpool Echo, Tielemans revealed that he was open to a move to Everton – and that it would ‘make sense’ for his career.
Football Insider verdict
With Ross Barkley’s future at Goodison Park uncertain, Tielemans could be the perfect replacement for him. The Belgian can play as an attacking midfielder, as a box-to-box player or even sit deep if needed, so he has plenty of versatility as well as quality to add to the Toffees’ side. Tielemans’ goals and assists record for Anderlecht speaks for itself, and although the Premier League is a massive step up from the Jupiler Pro League, it can be done – as shown by a certain Romelu Lukaku. Completing the signing would also be a huge signal of intent from Ronald Koeman and the club, proving that they are willing to pay top-dollar to attract Europe’s elite to the club and strengthen their bid for a top six finish.
