Everton have had ‘extremely lucky escape’ after deal collapses – Stefan Borson
Everton have had an “extremely lucky escape” after 777 Partners’ takeover collapsed following the latest controversy surrounding the company.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the US investment firm would likely have had funding issues almost immediately had it secured a takeover at Goodison Park.
It has now been revealed 777 has lost control of its football operations following various issues at other clubs in its portfolio.
The Miami-based company was granted exclusivity last September in its bid to buy Everton, but it was unable to complete the deal.
The Friedkin Group has now agreed a deal in principle to take on Farhad Moshiri’s 94.1 per cent stake in the Merseyside giants.
Everton would have been in further financial trouble under 777
Borson believes the Premier League club would have faced the same issues they have been dealing with over the past few years if 777 had managed to get its deal over the line.
“It’s definitely a lucky escape for Everton,” Borson told Football Insider.
“If this deal had gone through, I think almost immediately 777 would have had issues funding Everton and the rest of their clubs in the group.
“That would have just thrown Everton into exactly the same sorts of issues that it’s had historically.
“It wouldn’t have been that easy to unwind. In the 777 situation, they have lost control of the teams.
“It’s not straightforward for the funders of 777 to get control of the underlying clubs and what to do with those clubs going forward in terms of selling them, moving them on or funding them.

“All of those clubs are now in some kind of distress.
“That is the issue with multi-club ownership. If one goes down, they are all connected.
“But with 777, it’s an extremely lucky escape for Everton.”
