Star striker axed, one team dominates defence: Everton and Manchester City combined XI
By Emma Sanders
Ahead of the clash between Everton and Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday, Football Insider has selected the best combined XI between the two sides.
Five players from Everton make the cut in a fairly even team but the strengths and weaknesses of both sides are highlighted as City’s players dominate the attack and the Merseysiders have more players in defence.
Romelu Lukaku doesn’t make the squad, with Sergio Aguero one of the best strikers in the world, and there is just one defensive player from City as Nicolas Otamendi gets the nod ahead of Phil Jagielka and Ramiro Funes-Mori.
The Everton skipper lacks pace now despite his vast experience and teammate Ashley Williams partners the City star at centre-back ahead of Aleksandar Kolarov.
Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines offer much more going forward than the City full-backs Bacary Sagna and Gael Clichy so they are selected alongside Maarten Stekelenburg, who is named in goal ahead of the hapless Claudio Bravo.

The combined XI looks relatively weak in defence but going forward there is real quality in the side as Aguero beats Lukaku to the centre-forward role.
Aguero is joined by teammates Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling who play in the wide attacking roles alongside City star David Silva who lines up in an attacking midfield role.
Fernandinho and Idrissa Gueye are excellent holding midfielders and would provide brilliant cover for the back four.
In other Everton news, this is why Morgan Schneiderlin will not be a flop.
