Everton news: Expert hails 'perfect' Jordan Pickford - 'he's out of this world'

Noel Whelan has hailed “perfect” Everton shot-stopper Jordan Pickford after his “out of this world” performances in recent weeks.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 28-year-old’s performances epitomise why he is England’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Pickford produced seven saves as Everton recorded a crucial 2-1 win away at Leicester on Sunday (8 May) to lift themselves out of the bottom three.

The former Sunderland man also made a save of the season contender during the 1-0 win against Chelsea last week.

As quoted by the Daily Mail after Sunday’s match, manager Frank Lampard hailed Pickford “one of the world’s best” and claimed he “doesn’t get the recognition he deserves”.

Whelan claimed the 28-year-old’s saves will be watched “for years and years”.

“These performances just epitomise why he is England’s number one,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“He’s had a lot of criticism after some mistakes in an Everton shirt, but when it’s really mattered – he has been at his very, very best.

“He has put in some of the most perfect goalkeeping performances I have seen in a long, long time.

“The saves – they’ll be looked upon for years and years.

“There have been question marks over his status as the first choice for Gareth Southgate – but I don’t think anyone can question his ability now.

“Some of the saves have been out of this world.

“He’s got real athleticism and agility – and he’s just been outstanding.”

Everton have won three of their last five games to lift themselves out of the Premier League relegation zone.

The Toffees can extend their buffer to the drop zone with a win over already-relegated Watford on Wednesday (11 May).
