Everton news: Expert issues 'massive' Yerry Mina verdict after what he's seen - 'wow'

Everton have a “massive chance” of staying in the Premier League if Yerry Mina can reproduce his “brilliant” performance against Chelsea, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed inconsistency is the only thing stopping the 27-year-old from becoming “world class”.

Mina turned in a dominant display as Everton recorded a crucial 1-0 win over Chelsea at Goodison Park on Sunday (1 May), registering two blocks, four clearances, and winning four of his five duels.

The Colombia international has recently returned from a long-term hamstring injury which sidelined him since February.

Whelan bemoaned the defender’s lack of consistency but hailed the former Barcelona star for “rising to the occasion” since his return.

“He was brilliant,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“Inconsistency hampers him from being a world-class player, in my opinion.

“I watch him at times, and I’m thinking: ‘Wow, what a player’ – and what a leader he can be, too.

“But other times, he can be a very average centre-half who is capable of making really big mistakes – and some of them just leave you wondering how it’s happened.

“But he seems to rise to the occasion when the time is right. That’s the problem. You need these massive performances from him earlier in the season, and then Everton probably aren’t in this predicament.

“If he can manage to maintain this quality until the end of the season, that’ll give them a massive chance of staying up.”

Mina is out of contract at Goodison Park in June 2023.

The Toffees sit in the Premier League drop zone but are just two points behind Leeds with a game in hand on the Yorkshire side.
