Everton news: Robinson rejects Jordan Pickford verdict as controversy analysed - 'that's clutching at straws'

Paul Robinson has rubbished the idea Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford played a part in Jarrad Branthwaite’s sending off against Brentford.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England and Tottenham shot-stopper said Pickford, 27, was not at fault and suggestions otherwise are “clutching at straws.”

As shown by Sky Sports (15 May), Branthwaite was shown a straight red after just 18 minutes of Everton’s 3-2 loss to the Bees on Sunday.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football (16 May), Jamie Carragher blamed Pickford for the sending off.

The Sky Sports pundit suggested the England number one should have been off his line to sweep up the danger and prevent Branthwaite from fouling Ivan Toney.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs whether Pickford made a poor decision, Robinson said: “It doesn’t matter.

“You can say he got it wrong and should have come for it or you can say he was right to stay back. Either way he has made a decision and Branthwaite has to deal with it better. As a defender he has to deal with it.

“It is an unfortunate one but by the letter of the law he had to go. The last thing the referee wants to do is reduce one side to 10 men so early on. It was a tough one for the referee.

“I don’t think Pickford had any fault in it whatsoever. That is clutching and straws and laying blame on someone’s door who doesn’t need it.

“The referee had no choice.”
