Everton points deduction: Keith Wyness is ‘surprised’ by shattering new twist

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted the Premier League have sunk to “new depths” after the Merseysiders were handed a new two-point deduction.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the process has been “complete clown stuff” as revelations emerge from the independent commission’s hearing.

Everton received the two-point penalty on Monday (8 April) for a second breach of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules.

The Toffees immediately announced their intention to appeal against the decision – with a final verdict due by May 24, a week after the 2023-24 campaign.

An independent commission accepted Everton’s double jeopardy argument and also made allowances for the loss of a stadium naming rights deal, reducing the punishment from five to two points.

Everton verdict is ‘complete clown stuff’ after points deduction ‘surprise’, says Wyness

The verdict and penalty leaves Sean Dyche’s side 16th in the Premier League, two points above the drop zone with seven games to play.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Well, I’ve got to say that it’s another surprise.

“The surprise isn’t necessarily the scale of this deduction, but about the complete mess which has been exposed by the Premier League yet again.

“We’re now in the realms of half-point deductions, as well as one-point penalties.

“If someone ends up getting half a point back in an appeal, so you end up with 30.5 points – it’s getting into the realms of complete clown stuff – it’s ridiculous.

“Once again, we’ve found ways to go against the other judgements already made – and we’ve also discovered that there will potentially be a third hearing which could go into next season.

“They’re finding new depths to sink to.”
