Whelan: 'Big changes' coming at Everton in January after Benitez confession
Rafael Benitez will want to make a wave of new signings in January – but he must first offload the bad apples in the Everton dressing room.
So says ex-Premier League forward Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Toffees’ plans for the mid-season window.
As quoted by the Liverpool Echo on 12 September, Benitez admitted “we have to sell to buy players” and that he hopes to have “money in January”.
Demarai Gray, who cost a reported £1.8million, was the only player Everton signed on a fee-paying deal over the summer.
Seven senior stars meanwhile, including big earners Moise Kean and Bernard, left the club.
Football Insider revealed that the Toffees struggled to get James Rodriguez off the books because of his eye-watering £250,000-a-week wages.

And Whelan insists Everton can go on a January recruitment spree if they jettison those who have a negative impact on the dressing room.
He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “He’ll absolutely want to bring in a few new faces in January.
“New managers always want their own players. At the moment, their hands are tied because of certain players they can’t offload.
“It could be wages or sometimes a buying team might not trust a player. If a player doesn’t wanna be there, what’s to say he won’t do that at another club?
“It’s about character and getting a good dressing room when you’re trying to get good players in. Everyone needs to be fighting for each other in the trenches.
“They have got a couple of players who don’t want to join in that fight. So yeah, absolutely, there could be big changes there at Everton”
