Everton are keeping close tabs on Swansea playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson ahead of a possible January swoop, according to a report.
The Telegraph claims that the Merseysiders are firmly in the running to land the “darling of Swansea” as manager Ronald Koeman eyes transfer targets this month.
It is said, in the list of the newspaper’s top 100 targets in the January window, that Premier League champions Leicester and Serie A giants are also tipped to move for the 27-year-old attacking midfielder.
Swansea are mired in a relegation battle, just two points and one place above bottom club Hull, but Sigurdsson has continued to be the team’s standout player.
He has started all 20 of the Welsh club’s Premier League matches this season, scoring five goals and suppling six assists.
The 48-times Iceland international has a superb record at Swansea, where he has scored 33 goals and provided 23 assists in 112 appearances in all competitions.
Football Insider verdict:
Koeman has made it abundantly clear that current playmaker Ross Barkley is not producing the goods. Sigurdsson does not possess Barkley’s ability to carry the ball forward 60 yards but he is a proven Premier League performer with excellent technical skills and the vision to unlock well organised defences. The deadball specialist is also a consistent scorer and creator of goals, and has the stats this season that Barkley would die for. If Swansea go down, it is impossible to see the Icelandic ace being at the Liberty Stadium next season.
In other Everton transfer news, the club are in talks to sign three midfielder in January, although one deal has hit a stumbling block.
