Everton told to make Holgate U-turn after source’s transfer reveal – pundit

Everton should make a U-turn on their plan to sell Mason Holgate this month, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker claimed Holgate is the sort of player Everton should keep hold of.

Football Insider reported on New Year’s Eve the Blues are willing to listen to offers for the versatile defender in the January window to help raise vital funds.

A Burnley source told Football Insider yesterday (4 January) the club are now plotting a move for Holgate amid doubts over the futures of James Tarkowski and Ben Mee.

Both players are out of contract in the summer although Burnley have an option to extend Mee’s deal by a further 12 months.

Holgate has started Everton’s last three Premier League games with Yerry Mina out injured.

Asked whether the Toffees should cash in on the 25-year-old, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I think he’s a good player.

“He hasn’t played much recently but he is one that I would keep.

“I’m not sure what sort of money you would get for him. He’s a player that I like.

“Maybe Everton think he’s not going to play so they can use that money elsewhere.”

Holgate is under contract at Goodison Park until the summer of 2025 after he penned a new long-term deal in March 2020.

The former England Under-21 international has played 121 times for the Blues across all competitions, including 89 Premier League starts.
