Everton told to 'reject offer' for Digne after major development - pundit

Noel Whelan has urged Everton to rebuff any offers for Lucas Digne in January amid his falling out with Rafael Benitez.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, tipped the 28-year-old and Spanish manager to hold clear the air talks over the ongoing feud.

As reported by the Athletic on Wednesday (8 December), an exit has been mooted in some quarters after Digne’s row with Benitez.

The report states both parties feel trust has been eroded and there is no guarantee wounds will heal.

However, Whelan suggested Everton cannot afford to lose a player of Digne’s quality.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “You’d like to think that the two people in question can sit down and you sort this predicament out.

“On one hand you commend Benitez for putting his authority down.

“At the same time, players have got to abide by the rules and what the manager wants from them as a player in the position. It’s a very difficult situation.

“Can you replace a Digne with the quality that he has? I don’t think you can, so they should reject offers.

“You don’t want to lose players of his quality and disrupt the changing room.

“You do not want a rift or a cut in the camp when it comes to players and the manager. That’s not a good sign at all.”

Benitez left Digne out of the matchday squad for the Toffees’ 2-1 win against Arsenal.

It was only the second time the Frenchman has missed a Premier League game this season.
