Everton should not cash in on Mason Holgate as there is no guarantee they can lure Kalidou Koulibaly away from Napoli without European football.
That is the view of ex-Aston Villa and England striker Gabby Agbonlahor, speaking exclusively to Football Insider insisted Holgate will only get better despite his recent poor form.
As revealed by Football Insider, Everton will listen to offers for the Englishman this summer as they look to raise cash.
Holgate has been a mainstay this season and signed a new five-year contract just over a year ago.
The Senegal international, who turns 30 next month, is widely regarded of one of the world’s best defenders and has 75 European appearances under his belt.
Everton’s chances of qualifying for Europe are slim after losing to bottom-placed Sheffield United at the weekend.
And it’s for that reason Agbonlahor has suggested it may be worth keeping hold of Holgate.
Asked whether it would be worth selling the 24-year-old to fund a move for Koulibaly, he told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “It depends where Everton finish.
“If they don’t finish in the top six, maybe Koulibaly will want to play European football next season. That’s not a definite transfer to go through.
“I like Holgate. He’s made a few mistakes recently but I’d keep him because he’s a top defender.
“He’s young as well. He’s going to get better.”
Holgate has played 26 Premier League games this season, including 25 starts.
In his six seasons at Goodison Park, he has played over 100 times for the Blues.
