Ex-Aston Villa star issues 'incredible' claim and tells fans to expect more 'exciting' arrivals

Philippe Coutinho will not be the last high-profile signing to arrive at Aston Villa under Steven Gerrard.

That’s according to former Villains hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider following confirmation of the “exciting” transfer.

On Friday (7 January), Aston Villa confirmed the signing of Coutinho, 29, from Barcelona on loan until the end of the season.

Villa have also confirmed the deal includes the option to buy the Brazilian.

McAvennie insists Gerrard is the man to thank for pulling off the transfer and, as a result, tipped more big-name players to arrive at Villa Park over the next few years.

“I said this weeks ago, the calibre of player Gerrard can attract is incredible,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“You wonder who is going to arrive next. Coutinho is just, wow, what a name that is. There will be more like that.

“Villa are a great club and they will always be able to attract the big names.

“Gerrard just gives a boost to that, what a first signing. It’s a real statement of intent.

“I don’t think Coutinho will be the last big name to arrive at Villa. Maybe not this window but as long as Gerrard is there, there is that possibility.

“It’s such an exciting transfer and I can’t wait to see him make his debut.”

Aston Villa also confirmed the signing of Lucas Digne on Thursday (13 January).

Gerrard told the club site, “When Lucas became available we jumped at the opportunity to bring him to the club”.
