Ex-Fifa referee: Embleton is set for extended ban as controversial Sunderland footage emerges

Sunderland can have no complaints with Elliot Embleton’s red card in their 2-1 defeat to Gillingham, according to Keith Hackett.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee hit back at Lee Johnson’s complaints and insisted the sending off was “nailed on”.

Embleton was dismissed late on after launching into a challenge on Gillingham defender Jack Turner with Sunderland already 2-1 up.

He will now miss Sunderland’s next three games – league games with Crewe Alexandra and Charlton Athletic and the Carabao Cup tie with Queens Park Rangers.

As quoted by the Sunderland Echo, Johnson questioned the decision and claimed the fourth official and assistant referee close to him suggested it was a yellow card offence.

But Hackett suggested the referee was in the best place to make the decision.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley after analysing the footage: “I think it’s nailed on.

“Before these managers engage they really ought to have another look at the video.

“The referee’s in a great position. There’s excess force, it endangers the safety of his opponent and the referee is in a brilliant position.

“For me, it’s the correct call, a red car all day, every day. Serious foul play.

“I don’t think the referee needs the help of the fourth official and the assistant referee. He’s ideally positioned and sold the decision. It’s a red card.”

Embleton signed a new four-year contract with Sunderland just last week after an impressive start to the season.

The academy graduate, 22, has scored twice and provided three assists in 10 League One games this term.
