Ex-manager excited as new details emerge on ‘sensational’ Tottenham deal for Sarr

Alex McLeish has revealed his excitement as Tottenham close in on the signing of Pape Matar Sarr from Metz.

The former Scotland boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted he loved to see “young sensations” making a name for themselves.

As revealed by Football Insider on Monday (23rd August), Sarr, 18, has undergone a medical and agreed personal terms on a six-year contract.

A source has updated to tell Football Insider that Metz have accepted a Tottenham bid of £14m including add-ons for the teenage sensation, and he will be loaned straight back for the season.

Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea were all keen on signing the teenager.

McLeish suggested Spurs may have unearthed a “hidden gem” in Sarr.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I like to see these young sensations when they appear on the scene.

“The recruitment in the African countries is massive. You do tend to find hidden gems there and Sarr could be one.

I know back in the day the Belgian teams were able to introduce African players easier than the rest of Europe.

“Belgium ended up becoming a fantastic recruitment area as well. You didn’t have to pay the massive fees that are on the go nowadays.

“It sounds like good business from Spurs. Again, we’ll have to see how he adapts to playing against top English clubs.”

Despite his age, Sarr has established himself as a mainstay for Metz in Ligue 1.

He has also picked up two international caps for Senegal to date.
