Ex-manager issues exciting Newcastle transfer 'promise' as announcement today expected
Alex McLeish has insisted the Newcastle United will have “promised” Eddie Howe significant transfer funds for January in talks over the manager’s job.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland boss suggested Howe would have “one or two” players lined up as his top targets already.
As revealed by Football Insider today (5th November), Newcastle are set to announce the ex-Bournemouth manager as the new manager after we first broke the news on Wednesday morning that he was in advanced talks for the job.
He could be in charge for Saturday’s late kick-off against Brighton.
This site revealed yesterday that Howe has the backing of much of the Newcastle dressing room.
McLeish admitted the prospective new Magpies boss has “a challenge” to help the club avoid relegation.

He suggested the “promise” of January funds will have been a lure for Howe.
“He’s still got a challenge of keeping Newcastle up,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.
“I guess he will have one or two players in his mind that he will want. Signings to help bolster the team and save them from going into a spiral.
“It’s difficult for any manager going in if they’re not going to get any resources to improve the team and squad.
“I’m sure that Eddie’s going in there and getting that promise there’ll be funds.
“He will have a couple of players in mind too, just to keep Newcastle on the right side of safety.”
Newcastle currently sit 19th in the Premier League table with four points.
They are yet to win a game this season and are already six points off safety.
