Ex-manager warns Digne: Give yourself a 'shake-up' to save Everton career after controversy

Alex McLeish has insisted Lucas Digne needs a “shakeup” of attitude after reportedly falling out with Rafael Benitez at Everton.

The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted he feels sorry for the Spanish boss over the “difficult situation”.

As reported by The Athletic on Wednesday (8 December), Digne and Benitez had a row which led to the left-back being excluded against Arsenal.

Speaking to Sky Sports (7 December) Benitez refused to elaborate on the defender’s absence, insisting the “priority is the team”.

McLeish suggested people would blame the manager for the falling out.

However, he suggested Digne, 28, needs to take a look at himself in the mirror.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Because Rafa has come from Liverpool, there are people not really only his side now, at the moment.

“Everything is like the manager’s fault. If Digne’s not following the manager’s instructions, or the manager’s seen a weakness there of some sorts, let’s face it they won that game without him.

“It’s a case of when players throw a strop, everybody blames the manager.

“It’s a difficult situation for me, I’ve got empathy for the coach. You have to realise what he’s done in the game. As a player, think: ‘Maybe he’s right and I’m not right.’

“Maybe Digne’s got to give himself a wee shakeup.”

Digne played every minute in all but one of Everton’s 13 opening league games this season.

The France international has 127 appearances under his belt for the Toffees.

Ben Godfrey filled in at left-back against Arsenal.
