Ex-striker baffled by latest Richarlison-Real Madrid news as Everton told to 'hang on'

Frank McAvennie claims Rafael Benitez will struggle to get Everton fans on side if he sanctions the sale of Richarlison.

The former West Ham hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to a reported update on the Brazilian’s future.

On July 6th, Goal claimed former Toffees boss Carlo Ancelotti has held conversations with Richarlison over a possible move to Real Madrid.

This site revealed on 3rd June the Italian boss is keen to try and lure Richarlison to the Bernabeu.

It is understood Ancelotti believes the Brazilian to be the only player capable of playing for Los Blancos.

McAvennie insists it would be a bad move to let such a key player leave but doubts Real Madrid could afford Richarlison in any case.

“Have Real Madrid even got any money?” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“It’s a strange one for Rafa. He wants the fans on side and that won’t get them on side. It’s bizarre.

“The fans will know it’s nothing to do with him and Everton don’t have a chairman like he had a Newcastle.

“Moshiri isn’t Ashley, he won’t sell players for the sake of it.

“But to sell Richarlison, not just to Real Madrid but to Ancelotti, that won’t go down well at all.

“But they [Real Madrid] don’t have any money so I’m not sure what their plan is.

“I think Barcelona are worse off but Madrid won’t want to end up like them.

“This is a very strange one, let’s see what happens if a bid comes in. They need to hang on to him.”

Richarlison scored seven goals and picked up three assists in the Premier League last season.

He moved to Goodison Park from Watford in the summer of 2018.
