Ex-striker can't believe what he's heard after reported update on Everton's Benitez hunt
Frank McAvennie can’t fathom why Rafael Benitez is interested in taking the Everton job after a fresh update.
The former West Ham hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists no one will be happy about the potential move.
On 21st June, The Daily Mail reported Benitez is moving closer to becoming Everton boss after further talks with the club’s hierarchy.
On 19th June, Football Insider revealed Benitez has been told by his advisors to snub Everton and wait for the Newcastle job to become available.
The Blues continue their search for a new boss following Carlo Ancelotti’s decision to quit the club.
McAvennie claims Benitez joining Everton will be viewed the same as if Steven Gerrard crossed the Merseyside divide.

“Benitez is a massive Liverpool man, so that’s a big no-no,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“There were rumours about Steven Gerrard going to Everton in some of the papers.
“I can’t see either of them doing it. It’s like Ally McCoist becoming the Celtic manager, it just won’t happen.
“Liverpool’s affection for Benitez can get in the bin if he goes there. Can you imagine the fans at Everton if it didn’t work straight away?
“He’s on a hiding to nothing. I can’t see anyone being happy with it. Why would he want to bring his family into that?
“It’s a very strange one.”
The Toffees have also spoken to former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo.
The Blues will begin the 2021-22 season with a home clash against Southampton.
