Ex-striker slams Newcastle ‘mess’ as source reveals Hayden wants to join Watford

Frank McAvennie is not surprised to hear that Isaac Hayden wants out of Newcastle United.

The former West Ham hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest out of St James’ Park.

Football Insider broke the news earlier today that Watford are interested in signing the midfielder.

Crucially, a Magpies source has told this site that the player is keen on a move to Vicarage Road.

Hayden signed for Newcastle in 2016, joining from Arsenal, and has made 147 appearances for the Magpies.

Steve Bruce’s side have lost their first two Premier League games of the season in a fairly uninspiring fashion.

McAvennie was not shocked to hear Hayden wants to leave due to the “mess” at Newcastle.

“Newcastle isn’t a desirable place to be,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I’m looking at the players and their heads are so low, so low.

“I don’t know how Bruce is going to change that, he’s a good lad and he’ll talk to them.

“But Newcastle need fresh blood. That gets players excited again and it helps the dressing room.

“If that’s not going to happen then the players will start to think ‘what’s the point?’.

“A new signing gets an extra 20% out of players. Newcastle are still trying to steady the ship and they haven’t actually improved since last season.

“It’s a hard one for them to fix, it’s a mess.”

Hayden picked up an injury at Villa Park at the weekend.

However, on Monday, Bruce revealed the injury is not serious and he could return at the weekend.
