Darren Bent believes the Scottish title race between Celtic and Rangers will be “closer than people think” after both clubs did not sell their star strikers.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former England forward delivered his verdict after both Odsonne Edouard and Alfredo Morelos stayed at Celtic and Rangers after the transfer window closed on Monday.

Morelos, 24, had attracted interest from European clubs Lille and AC Milan but a deal failed to materialise.

Meanwhile, Edouard has been a long-term target of Arsenal who signed his Celtic teammate Kieran Tierney last summer.

Celtic and Rangers face off in the first Old Firm derby of the season after the international break on the 17th of October.

It remains to be seen whether Edouard will be available for the game after he tested positive for coronavirus while on international duty with France under-21s.

Asked by Football Insider whether the fact both strikers are staying at the club makes the title race more interesting this season, Bent said: “It does, yes with both of their main men staying.

“Fair play to them, they’ve done superbly well in holding on to them.

“It does make it exciting.

“If Stevie G can add Jack Wilshere to that as well it then wow, it will be very interesting because he’s a player of real quality.

Rangers

“I like it when it’s a head-to-head shoot out. I hate it when Celtic get off to a flying start and you can’t catch them and it’s over by Christmas.

“This season here I think it will be closer than people think.”
