Exclusive: 80-goal PL striker tipped to reject West Ham offer & sign for Tottenham
Kevin Phillips has tipped Olivier Giroud to turn down West Ham in favour of a move to Tottenham if he quits Chelsea this summer.
The former Sunderland and Southampton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed the 33-year-old would rather be playing for a top-six side even if he was promised a starting spot at the London Stadium.
The Express report that Spurs are back in for the £7million France international that they failed to sign in January but face competition from neighbours West Ham.
Giroud, who has one year left on his contract at Chelsea, is expected to leave this summer with Timo Werner close to completing a £53million move from RB Leipzig.
Phillips suggested Harry Kane’s injury record would provide the former Arsenal striker hope of game time at the club.
“I do not think he would be tempted by a move to West Ham,” he told Football Insider.
“We do not know what league West Ham are going to be in yet. If they do survive you would presume they will be scrapping relegation again next year.
“Having come from a side like Chelsea, does he want that? At Tottenham he could be challenging for a European spot. I know where I would rather be.
“Yes, you want to play week in, week out but Harry has had his injury problems at Spurs. He has been injured every season for the last two or three.
“Tottenham have the new stadium as well which is a pull. Players would love to play in that stadium.”
Giroud has scored three goals in 13 appearances this season but has featured predominantly as a substitute.
One of his goals came against Spurs in February in a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge and he has 80 in the Premier League across spells at Arsenal and Chelsea.
