Exclusive: Alex Moreno pushing to quit Aston Villa after U-turn

Alex Moreno is pushing to quit Aston Villa by the August 31st transfer deadline, sources have told Football Insider.

Moreno, 31, is said to be keen on a return to his native Spain following Aston Villa’s £37.5 million signing of Ian Maatsen from Chelsea.

Sources say they initially expected fellow left-back Lucas Digne, 31, to leave the club ahead of Moreno but the Spaniard now looks more likely.

Villa are trying to persuade Moreno to stay at the club but may be forced to reluctantly sell him if he continues to push for a move.

It has been an extraordinary summer of incomings and outgoings at Villa Park this summer, and more deals are imminent.

Football Insider revealed on Thursday (July 25) that striker Jhon Duran is close to joining West Ham after a huge offer.

Aston Villa may be helpless to stop Alex Moreno from leaving

Moreno has been at the club since his move from Real Betis in January 2023. The left-back has made 48 appearances for the Champions League club.

The left-back was a key player for the club as they secured Champions League football for the first time since 1982-83 under Unai Emery last season.

Only 11 of Moreno’s 21 Premier League appearances were starts with Emery preferring Frenchman Digne ahead of him.

The signing of Maatsen now puts Moreno even further down the pecking order with Villa now well-stocked in the left-back position.

Moreno isn’t the only player potentially leaving the club, Football Insider revealed (July 24) Tottenham are interested in midfielder Jacob Ramsey.

In other news, Villa could now accept an offer for star centre-back.
