Exclusive: Bent believes highly-rated Aston Villa player 'Running out of time' amid speculation

Darren Bent believes Aston Villa attacker Andre Green is running out of time when it comes to being able to rely on just having potential.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former Villans attacker admitted he was aware that Green was highly-rated but suggested he needed to start proving his talent.

Football Insider recently revealed that the 21-year-old’s future was in major doubt with him in the final six months of his Villa contract.

It is believed Dean Smith’s side are set to terminate Green’s season-long loan spell at Preston North End as soon as the January window opens.

Bent explained that when you look at what other players Green’s age are achieving then he needs to be seen as more than just potential.

When asked if it’s disappointing how Green’s loan spell at Preston has gone, Bent told Football Insider: “Yeah, I know he is rated very highly but I’ve not seen enough of him first-hand to make a judgement.

“But what I will say, at present, he is not getting much game time.

“The point of a loan is to get games and if he isn’t getting games, the situation needs to be looked at and assessed.

“There comes a point, 21-years-old nowadays, if you look at some of the kids we have in this country, 21 is getting on a little bit in terms of potential because a lot of players of that age are playing for their clubs.

“Mason Mason is 20, Tammy Abraham is 22? And these guys are getting their games in.

“So at 21, we can talk about potential and the potential is there but he is running out of time when you look at other players, as 21 is now old in regards to potential.”

Green has played six times in total for Preston this season, with his four league outings seeing him play a combined total of 86 minutes.

The 21-year-old left-sided winger has appeared 49 times for Villa’s senior team during his career after rising through the ranks of the club’s youth academy.
