Exclusive: Bent claims Tottenham players will be 'buzzing' as imminent development reported

Tottenham players and supporters will be “buzzing” over the imminent expiry of the buyout clause in Toby Alderweireld’s contract, according to Darren Bent.

The former Spurs striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, says that he is surprised the Belgian has stayed in north London with the £25million release clause included in his contract, insisting clubs should see him as something of a bargain.

As has been widely reported, Alderweireld’s release clause expires at midnight on Thursday evening, meaning that Spurs will no longer face the prospect of him departing without any chance to negotiate a price tag.

Bent insists this is brilliant news not only for those in the stands but the players in the dressing room, although warned there was still time for things to change in the transfer market.

“If you’re a Spurs fan or a player you’re buzzing because it looks like he’s going to be staying at the football club,” Bent told Football Insider.

You think to yourself surely, at £25million, you’d think someone would come and snap Spurs’ hand off for him at that price but for whatever reason that hasn’t happened. I am surprised.

“If you’re a Spurs fan, you’re buzzing because you’re keeping one of your best players. There’s still a long way until the window shuts.”

Alderweireld made 50 appearances across all competitions for Tottenham last season, although he failed to score a single goal despite his vast number of games.

Since joining the club from Atletico Madrid, he has played 159 games for the Lilywhites.

In other Tottenham news, Bent says Spurs will have two players in mind as they plot an £80million transfer raid this summer.
