Darren Bent insists it was “massive” for Leeds United goalkeeper Kiko Casilla to keep a clean sheet in the club’s win over Bristol City on Saturday.
The former Tottenham and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes keeping the Robins at bay will be a major boost of confidence for the Spaniard.
Casilla has come under fire for his recent performances at Elland Road, with notable individual mistakes contributing to the Whites’ own poor run of form in recent weeks.
Having see the shot-stopper keep the opposition out for the first time since the 2-0 win over Hull City at the start of December, Bent says it is a significant boost for the 33-year-old.
“You’re right, it’s massive, it’s massive for him,” Bent told Football Insider when asked how important a clean sheet was for Casilla and Leeds.
“He’s looked very, very shaky, he hasn’t looked like the goalkeeper that we’ve seen in previous seasons. That win there was massive because I feared the worst.
“They were sitting there on 56 points, Fulham are there on 56 behind, Brentford are just behind, Forest are a point behind – you’re thinking if certain results go against them, they go fifth!
“They managed to grind out a win. I do worry about Leeds and you just think what else can they do?”
Casilla has managed to keep 13 clean sheets this season, with six of those coming in the eight games prior to the recent run without a shutout.
He has conceded 54 goals in as many games during his time at Elland Road, 32 of which have come this campaign.
