Exclusive: Bent suggests January signing on cards for Leeds due to concern about key player
Darren Bent suggested that Leeds United could sign a creative midfielder in January due to Pablo Hernandez needing to be rested more.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former England international claimed a January signing could be on the cards for the Whites as clearly Hernandez could do with a rest.
The 34-year-old has played 15 times across all competitions this season for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, racking up three goals and registering three assists.
Bent explained that given Bielsa’s intense training methods then it would make sense if the Whites signed a player to take some of the burden off Hernandez.
When asked if Hernandez needs to rest due to being an important player for the club as it seems to be a concern that he is running out of steam, Bent told Football Insider: “Yeah he is, he’s one of their most creative players and arguably their best player.
“He needs to get rest when he can because at the same time you don’t want to burn your players out, and you know full well that Bielsa trains his players really really hard.
“And the squad isn’t the biggest so yeah he may have to take the foot off the gas with him at times.
“But again he is probably thinking, if I do that then someone else has to step up.
“So it wouldn’t surprise me in January if they try to sign another creative midfielder in January to take a bit of the burden off Hernandez.”
Hernandez has been at Elland Road since August 2016 after originally joining Leeds on loan from Qatar club Al Arabi.
The veteran winger is contracted to stay with Leeds until 2022 after signing a contract extension in November.
