Darren Bent suggests that Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa will need to bring in another goalkeeper even if they imminently complete the signing of giant incumbent Illan Meslier.

The former Tottenham and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists that the Whites could do with upgrading their options between the sticks if they are promoted this season.

As revealed exclusively by Football Insider, the Whites are in advanced talks over signing Meslier permanently, having told Lorient they will trigger the £5million purchase clause in his loan terms.

The 6ft 5in 20-year-old had taken Kiko Casilla’s place in the starting XI after the Spaniard’s suspension, playing two league games before the postponement of Championship fixtures.

However, with Casilla’s erratic form and Meslier’s inexperience, Bent thinks another goalkeeper would be a welcome addition on promotion.

Asked if he thought Leeds needed to strengthen between the sticks, Bent told Football Insider: “Yeah, definitely, but when you get promoted from the Championship I think you can strengthen in all areas.

“I think you can strengthen anywhere when you’re in the Premier League, it doesn’t really make a difference where. You need good players, you need a lot of them.

“You need to keep the core of the team there but you need to upgrade your players. A goalkeeper’s a good one, centre-forward would have to be one, maybe a centre-half.”

Prior to his ban, Casilla had appeared in all but one of Leeds’ league games since his debut back in January 2019, with a total of 56 appearances under his belt at Elland Road.

Meslier meanwhile has just 33 first-team appearances under his belt at club level, the majority coming for Lorient in the French second tier.
