Darren Bent suggested Aston Villa manager Dean Smith may have to axe midfielder John McGinn as he is starting to look a little tired.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former Villans attacker claimed that McGinn could do no wrong at Villa due to having done so much right.
McGinn has failed to register an assist or score in his last five league outings after previously racking up three goals and two assists earlier in the campaign.
Bent explained that the Scotland international has earned untouchable status at Villa Park, but suggested Smith may need to rest him sooner rather than later.
When asked if Smith needs to give McGinn a break as his form seems to have dipped due to looking tired, Bent told Football Insider: “Yeah potentially, he has played a lot of games this season and last season.
“He is someone who can do no wrong as he has done so much right, so he has earned that.
“But he is starting to look a bit tired.”
McGinn has played 18 times across all competitions for the Villans this season while also regularly featuring for Scotland.
The 25-year-old played a total of 49 times for Villa in his 2018/19 season, racking up 10 goals and 12 assists in the process.
McGinn has been at Villa Park since joining from Scottish club Hibernian in July 2018 and is contracted to stay with Villa until 2024.
