Darren Bent claims that losing Lucas Digne to Chelsea or Manchester City this summer is the “last thing” Everton want to do.
The former Tottenham and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists the 26-year-old has been a “brilliant” replacement for former first-team mainstay Leighton Baines.
As reported by ESPN, both Chelsea and Manchester City have set sights on the former Barcelona defender as an alternative target to Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell.
However, Bent has urged the Toffees to keep the Premier League giants at bay, insisting they would struggle to find someone who could fill the void left by the France international.
Bent told Football Insider: “Technically, the free kicks, defensively – it was good that they managed to get someone straight after Leighton Baines because obviously Baines has been there a while and was their first-choice left-back.
“It’s been brilliant that they’ve get someone else in to replace him quite quickly so (letting him go is) the last thing they want to do – they’ve had a steady left-back for 12 years and hopefully they can hold onto the next one because the last thing they want to do is lose him so soon after he got there.”
Digne has been Everton’s first-choice left-back since signing from Barcelona back in 2018, with 71 appearances under his belt across all competitions.
He has played a total of 34 times this season and has missed just three Premier League games for the Toffees.
In other Everton news, Bent has backed a blockbuster swap deal involving a former Toffees player.
