Darren Bent claims it would be a “great bit of business” if Everton can seal a swap deal with Manchester City involving Mason Holgate and John Stones.
The former Tottenham and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes Carlo Ancelotti should be looking to get someone in return if they are to sell the versatile defender.
Bent admits that he has some doubts over the Manchester City star’s defensive capabilities but insists it would be good business if Everton were to take him back to Goodison.
Bent told Football Insider: “John Stones going back to Everton would be a great story but John Stones, as a footballer, fantastic – passing ability, on the ball, love him.
“But obviously John Stones’ problem has always been defending and as a defender I’d like to think that’s probably a basic necessity, that you need to know how to defend.
“Listen, if Everton can get something out the deal, maybe get a player in the other way, like John Stones, then I think that would be a great bit of business all round.”
Stones, 26, has played just 20 times across all competitions for City this season, with Pep Guardiola preferring to play Aymeric Laporte, Nicolas Otamendi and Eric Garcia ahead of him.
Holgate meanwhile has been a mainstay for Carlo Ancelotti and has started all but one Premier League game since October.
