Blackburn Rovers have moved back into pole position to sign Crewe Alexandra defender Harry Pickering, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The 22-year-old is also of interest to Sheffield Wednesday and looks set to leave Gresty Road before Monday’s transfer deadline.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Blackburn have submitted a new bid for the left-back.

The Championship side are now in the driving seat to beat Sheffield Wednesday to the defender’s signature.

Pickering has been one of Crewe’s standout players this season – he has contributed four goals and two assists in 28 appearances across all competitions.

However, the left-back has missed the Railwaymen’s last two League One fixtures with a back injury, although it is not thought to be serious.

A product of the Crewe academy, Pickering made his senior debut against Bolton in August 2017 and has gone on to make 145 more appearances for the Cheshire club.

He is under contract at Gresty Road until the summer of 2023, having put pen to paper on a new long-term deal last September.

He could become Blackburn’s second signing of the January window following the arrival of Everton centre-half Jarrad Branthwaite on loan.

Rovers boss Tony Mowbray is keen to bolster his defence before Monday’s transfer deadline to strengthen his side’s chances of gaining promotion.

The Blue and Whites, who boast the best attack in the Championship, sit 10th in the table and six points off the Play-Off spots.

In other news, Preston North End and Blackburn have opened preliminary talks with Everton over signing Anthony Gordon this month.
