Brentford are in advanced talks to sign Rochdale midfielder Jordan Williams on a summer free, Football Insider can reveal.

The London club are close to agreeing the transfer of the 24-year-old following his stellar campaign in League One.

A Brentford source has told Football Insider the club have offered a three-year contract to Williams in an attempt to entice him to the capital.

His season has already come to an end following the premature termination of League One and that paves the way for him to quit Rochdale when his deal expires on 30 June.

Brentford have a reputation for discovering hidden gems and pulling well above their weight in the transfer market.

Williams certainly has pedigree after learning his trade at Liverpool, who he joined at Under-14 level.

He even made his first-team debut for the Champions League holders in September 2014 at the age of 18 but did not add to that solitary appearance.

Williams had an initial spell on loan at Rochdale in 2017-18 before signing permanently the following summer on a two-year deal.

Capped by Wales at Under-21 level and a former Notts County and Swindon loanee, he has been a mainstay of the ‘Dale side over the last two seasons.

He made 28 league starts among 35 appearances in all competitions in 2019-20.

In a clear indication of why Brentford have made a move for him, Williams has the second highest pass completion rate in League One this season.

In other Championship news, the Bees’ promotion rivals Leeds United have turned to Mauricio Pochettino to help seal a marquee signing.
