Bristol City are on the verge of signing proven Premier League defender Ashley Williams on a free transfer, Football Insider can reveal.
Williams, 34, is a free agent after leaving Everton earlier this summer when his contract expired.
A City source has told Football Insider that Williams is advanced talks over signing a one-year deal at Ashton Gate and is expected to make the move to the Championship club in the next 48 hours.
Bristol City boss Lee Johnson is looking to strengthen his defensive options after losing Adam Webster to Brighton earlier this summer and is convinced Williams fits the bill.
The player can be signed outside of the transfer window as he is a free agent and without a club.
Capped 86 times by Wales, Williams also has a wealth of club experience accumulated at Everton, Swansea City, Stockport County and Stoke City, where he spent last season on loan.
Williams was a regular last season at Stoke, where he made 27 league starts among 37 appearances in all competitions.
