Exclusive: Bruce names the two Leeds players Bielsa may doubt can cut it in PL

Alex Bruce believes Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa will be questioning whether he needs to sign a new goalkeeper amid doubts over Kiko Casilla and Illan Meslier.

The former Leeds and Hull City defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has emphasised the importance of having a “steady-eddie” between the sticks should United get promoted to the Premier League.

Kiko Casilla has been Bielsa’s first-choice this season, although teenager Illan Meslier has started the last two games during the Spaniard’s eight-game ban.

As revealed exclusively by Football Insider, the Whites are working on tying the 19-year-old to a permanent deal after informing parent club Lorient they will be triggering the £5million purchase clause.

However, Bruce believes Bielsa will be considering if he needs another new shot-stopper, with Casilla proving erratic at times and Meslier lacking experience.

Asked if Bielsa would be looking to sign a new goalkeeper, Bruce told Football Insider: “He might be, but only one person can answer that and that’s Bielsa.

“One thing I will say for certain is next year, in the Premier League, the goalkeeper is a massive, massive position. For those teams who get promoted out the Championship, you have a year winning games and then all of a sudden you’re under the pump.

“It’s very rare that a team gets promoted from the Championship and does what Sheffield United have done, for example, where normally they’re scrapping and fighting relegation.

“Obviously the goalkeeping position is going to be very important and Bielsa will need to ask himself the question: ‘Am I confident with the keepers? I need a steady-eddie.’

“If you’re ever going to need a steady-eddie in one position, it’s in goal, who can cope with the Premier League, cope with the levels that it tests you to.

“It will be interesting to see what he does but an experienced, good goalkeeper in general is massively important, as we’ve seen. The role a goalkeeper can have is huge.”
