Noel Whelan is adamant that Shane Duffy will prove to be a “fantastic signing” for Celtic after a loan bid was accepted by Brighton.
The former Aberdeen and Leeds United striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that the 28-year-old would be “a leader” at Parkhead and “player that Neil Lennon could trust”.
Football Insider revealed earlier today that the stalemate in discussions between Celtic and Brighton had been broken and all parties are now confident of the multi-million pound signing being completed in the next 72 hours.
Brighton were holding out for a £2million-plus loan fee for Duffy but the Scottish giants had been reluctant to pay that before the breakthrough.
The centre-half has been the subject of interest from the Premier League’s West Ham and West Brom but the player has made it clear that he wishes to move to Glasgow this summer.
When asked by Football Insider what the Republic of Ireland international will bring to Paradise, Whelan said: “Duffy will bring Celtic that aggression.
“He has that experience and will be a player that Neil Lennon can trust. You will get professionalism from him.
“I do not think any striker would want to be up against him. He is competitive, dominant in the air and will be a nightmare to mark at set pieces.
“They already have an abundance of quality. He is not your Ben White. He is not great on the ball and will not be driving out of defence and pulling off Cruyffs but Neil Lennon does not want that. Celtic need someone that will just defend and dominate a centre-forward for 90 minutes.
“He will be a leader in the dressing room and demand more from other people. It will be a fantastic loan signing for player and club. A very strong addition in that league.”
