Exclusive: Danny Mills Wowed as Chelsea make 'Exceptional' player new No1 target

Danny Mills claims Chelsea will have their work cut out trying to persuade Jose Gimenez to leave Atletico Madrid this summer.

The former Leeds and Manchester City full-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, hailed the 25-year-old as “exceptional” but claimed he be reluctant to leave a “special” Diego Simeone side.

The centre-half signed for the Spanish giants in 2013, at the age of just 18, and has gone on to make 190 appearances for the club.

Football Insider revealed last week that the Blues have made the Uruguay international their number one defensive target this transfer window.

It comes after West Ham refused to back down on their £80million-cash valuation of the versatile Declan Rice, despite numerous offers from Frank Lampard’s side.

When asked by Football Insider if Gimenez was the answer to the club’s defensive problems, Mills said:

“There are not many players that want to leave Atletico Madrid. It is very difficult to entice them out of there. Simeone has created something incredibly special at Atletico and we have seen that throughout the years.

“You have got to be an exceptional defender to play in that side, we know that.

“It is never easy playing players that have been in Spain for a while. Does he fit in at Chelsea immediately?

“Chelsea have to address their defensive frailties. They will be scouring Europe for a couple of top defenders this summer.”

Gimenez, who has three years remaining on his contract, has made 26 appearances so far this season with Atletico Madrid still competing in the Champions League.

They travel to Lisbon to face RB Leipzig on Thursday for a place in the semi-finals of Europe’s elite competition.

In other Chelsea news, Paul Robinson has told Football Insider that it would take an a “very lucrative” offer to sign “outstanding” 28-year-old this summer.
