Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa

Danny Mills has been blown away by Illan Meslier in the past two games for Leeds United and has tipped the goalkeeper to keep hold of the number one jersey next season.

The former England international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed any potential goalkeeper signed this summer would have to be “significantly better” to replace the 20-year-old between the sticks.

After criticism for his performance against Cardiff the Leeds goalkeeper responded with two impressive performances against Fulham and Luton Town.

Meslier made a number of smart stops on his way to a clean sheet against the Cottagers and was helpless to Harry Cornick’s second-half strike on Tuesday as Marcelo Bielsa’s side drew 1-1 with Luton.

Mills claims that the young shot-stopper has benefitted from having no immediate competition while Kiko Casilla serves his eight-match ban.

“He knows he is going to play and that is always good for a player, whether it be a centre-forward or a goalkeeper,” he told Football Insider.

“When there is an element of doubt and you think you could potentially be dropped – it puts a bit more pressure on you. That is never easy.

“Meslier knows he is going to play between now and end of the season.

“There is nothing he can do about the goal against Luton. It was a fabulous finish.

“Meslier looks like he is really good keeper. Anybody that comes in is going to have to be significantly better than him if they are going to come in as number one.”
