Exclusive: Darren Bent reacts after major Celtic deal agreed in latest twist

Darren Bent has claimed it would be “disappointing” not to see Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster secure a move back to Celtic this summer.

The former England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, admits that football can be “cruel” as the 32-year-old stalls on signing a deal at Parkhead.

Speaking to Sky Sports on Monday, the Celtic boss confirmed that a loan agreement was in place between the two clubs but that talks had “gone quiet” from the shot-stopper’s end.

Bent admits that the finances between the Premier League and the Scottish Premiership are huge and that Celtic may just not be able to give the shot-stopper what he wants financially.

Bent told Football Insider: “It is disappointing and if he can’t get the money that he wants, the Premier League, as big as Celtic are, money-wise they just can’t compete.

“It’s disappointing because he’s done very well there, I’m pretty sure he’d want stay there, I’m sure the fans like him but this is the nature of football – it can be a bit cruel.

“He probably wants to stay, he likes it there but if you can’t get paid to go there or what you feel you’re worth then it’s difficult. That’s not him being greedy, that’s just him being: ‘I’m worth this and if you can’t pay me that, what can I do?’

“I’m pretty sure someone will take him because he’s a very good player, done very well for Celtic and I’m sure he’ll get a move somewhere.”

Forster played 39 times across all competitions during the 2019/20 season, helping Celtic win the Scottish Premiership and Scottish League Cup.

The Hoops only have one senior shot-stopper at Parkhead at the moment in the shape of Scott Bain after Craig Gordon left on a free transfer.

In other Celtic news, Noel Whelan has been left blown away as Leeds United reportedly set their sights on signing a Hoops ace.
